Our ears have two main functions; allowing us to both hear and maintain our balance. With the passing years as we age our ears become less effective, both in their ability to detect high notes, or evenly across all notes, and most commonly in their sensitivity to the quieter sounds. In fact, one of three adults over the age of 65 has a hearing loss and half of seniors over the age of 75 have a hearing loss. Over exposure to loud noise will cause hearing reduction, and another cause of this can be inherited defects in hearing, which are also quite common.

The signs of hearing loss are normally relatively easy to detect:-

1) If the sounds you hear are indistinct and as if coming to you through cotton wool

2) You hear, but then are unable to understand spoken words

3) A common request you make is for others to say things for you again, more clearly, loudly etc.

4) You complain that the programmes you hear are difficult to listen too, actors and presenters speak too quietly, and you need to turn up the dial

Should you have answered yes to one or more of the above, we suspect that you will also be tending not to seek to engage in discussions when a number of people are involved in the way you did once. If so, and both are true, then there is a very high possibility that you have a hearing impediment. Hearing impairment usually occurs to the cochlea, when the cochlea (that is our inner ear sensor which is coiled and contains a huge number of special delicate sound sensing hairs), experiences sound at above eighty five decibels intensity for a prolonged period.

Other frequent causes of loss of hearing can be:-

1) Damage due to infection

2) Abnormal bone growths

3) Growths (cancerous in nature) in the ear

4) Ear drum damage (usually by rupturing).

Of course, there are other rarer non age related cuases of hearing loss such as, Auditory Neuropathy, Meniere's Disease, Noise Ostosclerosis and Usher's Syndrome.

These boil down to 3 basic hearing loss types:-

A) Conductive Damage to Hearing

For this type of damage to have occurred the lack of proper conduction of the sound vibrations from the outside world into the inner ear (cochlea) is the common cause of hearing reduction or near complete loss. Causes can be temporary/reversible such as due to curable infection, the presence of unwanted fluids, or indeed even excess ear wax.

B) Neural and Sensor Type Deafness

Anything that damages the inner ear is the type of hearing loss in this case. These may result from exposure to noise, virus infections, physical damage to the head, old age and cancerous growths.

This type of hearing problem also includes any problems which may actually be due to an inability of the brain to interpret the sound signal it receives.

C) Combination of Hearing Problems

Combine A) and B) and you have this unfortunate type of loss or deafness. Thankfully, this is not a common event.

Of the three possible forms of hearing loss, this is the final type.

People may be affected by hearing deterioration in both left and right ears together, or just a single ear may be affected. Inner ear infections can cause a rapid onset of partial, or complete, deafness.
