What are the proper steps to take when training your own therapy dog?
I'm diabetic, and I'm looking to train a puppy that I will buy around christmas time to carry a Therapy Dog Vest with my supplies, Dial 911 ( as I plan to move out soon), etc. I will not be training the dog to recognize scents associated with high and low blood sugars.

Allow me to correct myself, I meant to say SERVICE DOG.
A therapy dog is one that is trained, tested, registered and insured so that it can visit people in hospitals and nursing homes to cheer them up.
A service animal is individually trained to perform tasks that the disabled owner cannot do for themselves. "Animals whose sole function is to provide emotional support, comfort, therapy, companionship, therapeutic benefits, or to promote emotional well-being are not service animals." It typically takes 18-24 months to fully train a service dog and this requires considerable skill. It's not the kind of do-it-yourself project where you pick a dog the way you would pick a pet and just read a book or buy a video. It takes skill. If you do not already have the skill to train an advanced working dog, then it's time to hire the trainer that is going to help you first, before looking at dogs. Statistics from Paws With A Cause have shown that 1 dog in a hundred in the shelter system actually has all of the characteristics needed to become a service dog. What are the odds that a person without experience is going to pick out that one dog? The odds for an expert at the very top of their game is 50/50 at best when going with a dog whose genetics are known (which is not the case with shelter dogs). Programs that breed their own are showing positive results in 7 out of 8 prospects. Even an expert is going to score less than 1 in 10 correct picks at a shelter because there are so many factors you can't evaluate at the shelter, such as costly veterinary screening.

If carrying your supplies is going to be considered a task, then you must be unable to carry them yourself because of your disability. I'm not aware of diabetes preventing a person from carrying a purse or wearing a belt pack. The same goes with calling 911. Be aware that if all your dog does is call 911, then you'll have no justification for taking him in public since this skill requires a special phone that he won't find any place but at your home. This is the problem that arises when a person decides they want a service dog, then try to figure out tasks to justify having one instead of looking first at what they actually need because of their disability and then choosing the best route to get that need met.

Dogs don't need fingers to dial 911, and monkeys don't do it that way either. They use a specially designed phone that has one large button. All the animal has to do is hit that one button. SARA (Service Animal Registry of America) is a scam. They'll sell their "certification" to anyone for a fee, regardless of whether the animal is actually a pet or a service animal.
